The Bucket Theory.
I can't remember all of it (we were probably drinking at the time) but it kind of goes that all of your friends are in buckets spread out around you and sometimes people move into different buckets but it doesn't mean you're not friends anymore it just mean you're not as close, and people change buckets all the time depending on the situation (like I said we were probably drinking).
In a way that's true. People who I don't contact so much are just as dear as those I see all the time - but I have less energy to communicate unless they move into a closer bucket. The friends I have kept are the type of people who when you see each other, you just slip back into place when you last saw them. I know I can be a bad friend because I am useless at email and never remember anyone's Birthdays unless they are very obvious about it and drop hints weeks before (hints like - "it's my Birthday in 3 weeks time").
